Shopping & Transport
Shopping and Markets
The local markets are held weekly on the following days:
- Calis – Sunday
- Fethiye – Tuesday
- Hisaronu – Monday
Do barter – they expect it and enjoy it – it is great fun
and always in good humour. They will take TYL, Sterling and other currencies.
At the markets expect to find fresh produce, linen, homewares, jewellery
and clothes. Markets start at 7.00am and peter out early to mid afternoon.
Shops are generally open 8.00am until late except Sundays. There are
a few supermarkets which open for longer e.g. MM Migros on the main Calis-Fethiye
road (it has everything).
Paying for things is very easy in Turkey, with VISA, Switch Cards, Euros
and Sterling all widely accepted as well as the local currency.
Transport
- Dolmus’s are great value, great fun, frequent, reliable and
flexible. You can flag them down anywhere and get off anywhere. As an
example Fethiye to Calis is 40p (no matter how short or long your journey
on this route).
- Taxis. There are plenty of taxis, they always give discounts on meter
prices, which are cheap anyway. If encouraged, the drivers will (courteously)
help you shop, barter and unload shopping to your house! So, so helpful.
As a guide, the taxi to Fethiye is about £4.
The water taxi from Calis to Fethiye and Fethiye to Calis is the only
way to travel in our book. It costs £1 return (return journey
can be taken at any time) and children ride free. You can also hire
these taxis for private boat trips which is great value if there are
a few of you.
- Calis is very flat and therefore you can walk. From our villa it
is a 15-20 minute walk to the beach or a three minute dolmus ride
- Scheduled buses provide trips along the main links to adjoining regions:
Mugla, Antalya and Burdur.
