Places to Visit
Fethiye
Calis Water Park
Speaks for itself…….an unobstrusive aqua city not
far from Villa Rosa
Butterfly Valley
A short boat ride from Olu Deniz, Butterfly Valley is a flat-bottomed
valley enclosed by towering cliffs. It is so named because the ‘Jersey
Tiger’, a spectacular red, black & white tiger moth that colonises
the valley by the thousand in the summer.
Kayakoy (next to Hisaronu)
The eerie deserted Greek village that dates from the 15th century. In
1923 there was a population exchange agreement between the Turkish and
Greek governments. Although the Greeks happily relocated to Greece, the
Turks living in Greece didn’t want to come here because the Greek
government refused to indemnify the land houses and goods that they owned.
It is now a ghost town, although there are proposals to use the attractive
site as a venue for weddings.
Saklikent Gorge
Saklikent is a huge valley and canyon extending 14km inland.
Walk through ice cold pure limestone-filtered waters (which you can drink)
in the incredibly narrow gorge between two mountains. At the base of the
gorge are restaurants that specialise in locally-farmed trout. On the
way back to Fethiye stop off for Ayran, a mixture of yoghurt, water and
salt made by the local villagers.
Dalyan
About an hour from Calis/Fethiye Daylan offers an interesting
day out. It is sited on the pretty Dalyan River and is full of ancient
and natural sites, including the unmissable Carian rock tombs. Only 10%
of the city has been unearthed and every year more treasures are discovered.
Negotiate
with one of the local fishing boat captains to take you to some or all
of the places to see e.g. the mud-baths, Iztuzu Beach (home to Loggerhead
Turtles), the lovely river, the ancient city of Caunos (with its theatre,
Roman bath, temple and acropolis on the hill) and into town to try one
of the superb seafood restaurants along the river.
